Learn Digital Literacy (a community initiative)” is nearing its end and it has proved to be popular among the vulnerable migrants and refugees who are client of Sydney Multicultural Community Services settlement program. This digital literacy course is designed and organised by Rigzin Yuthok, SMCS settlement case worker/youth worker, in partnership with TAFE Ultimo outreach team.

Participants have limited digital literacy skills and English language therefore the course is designed to help them overcome challenges posed by Covid 19 and also enable them to access services and support such as Pandemic Disaster Payment, Vouchers of various kinds from NSW government, trained to use Rapid Antigent test and how to register positive result of RAT test. Even though the participants learned number of new valuable information this course highlight of all was their learning how to perform Rapid Antigen Test at home and how to register positive result on Service NSW website.

The actual idea to facilitate such a course has been there for some time but the decision to go ahead with the course this time was a direct result of the outreach work SMCS conducted in partnership with SCOA late last year during the peak of pandemic.

So far, 4 adults from Bangladeshi background, 2 from Chinese background and 2 Arabic speaking humanitarian entrants have participated in this course.

This coming Friday is going to be the final Friday of the course. Participants are going to learn how to create an account on TAFE NSW website. They will be informed about accessing TAFE NSW website to apply for fee free short courses available for them.

We hope to continue this wonderful course in the future.

🎈🥳PROMOTING OUR FREE CENTRE-BASED RESPITE/ SOCIAL SUPPORT GROUPS FOR Multicultural and Indian Subcontinent (Hindi Speaking) Communities

Sydney Multicultural Community Services is known for upholding the rights and dignity of the culturally and linguistically diverse communities for over 40 years. We continue to provide avenues for social interactions, create awareness of our diverse cultures and languages; and most of all, look after the elderlies in our community that have made such important contributions over their lives to who we all are today. Over the years, members from our other respite/ social support groups have benefitted from our programs and developed a close relationship with one another. Groups like this have helped elderlies find companionship and alleviate loneliness.

We are launching two respite/ social support groups, Multicultural and the Indian Subcontinent (Hindi Speaking) in the North Sydney Region. The Multicultural Group will be held every Thursday 9:30am – 2:30pm in Lane Cove and the Indian Subcontinent group will be held every Monday 9:30am – 2:30pm in Crows Nest. Morning tea and food will be provided. Attendees can expect a fun packed day of socialising and culturally sensitive activities. A Diversional Therapist will be present on both days to guide the groups. Best of all, the program is of no charge to the attendees.

Those who are over the age of 65 or already registered with My Aged Care for Centre Based Respite and residents of the North Sydney region are eligible. The programs will start soon. We are currently accepting expressions of interest. Call us today on 02 9663 3922 or email info@sydneymcs.org.au to book your spot.

“The Garden of the transformation”

Today, the “Art for Health and Wellbeing” group participated in a guided visualisation meditation to assist with stress and anxiety reduction and to induce a state of relaxation in the body and mind. creating a sense of calm.
Visualisation was used in conjunction with the creative process followed by exchanging experiences.

Guided visualisation meditation is a beneficial method of cultivating a positive attitude and fostering the development of creativity and imagination.

As a result, each participant was able to produce an original work of art using different art materials like coloured pencils, pastels collage and acrylic paint.

This experience was not about being correct or incorrect; it was about expressing themselves individually and collectively through shapes, colours, and drawings that were presented to them in the moment.
