Bush walk – knowing nature and the environment – 15 October, 2017

October 23, 2017 at 2:54 am

What a phenomenal event! With over 30 people and 12 km, our very first bushwalk was a great success! We trekked from Heathcote Train Station, through the amazingly beautiful Karloo Pools, up to Uloola Falls, and then down the fire road to Waterfall Station. We saw a huge variety of plants, insects, spiders, birds, and lizards; including the iconic wattle, carnivorous sundews, intimidating bull ants, teeny tiny jumping spiders, some gorgeous Superb Fairy Wrens, a parasitic fantail cuckoo, super fast stripe skinks, and a cute baby Jacky dragon. Stanley Tang, SCB Events Manager, not only organised our outing, but also used recorded bird calls to let us get a close look at many of the beautiful native birds, including a large flock of adorable Brown Thornbills, that surrounded our hiking group and chattered in the trees above us, and an Eastern Spinebill that followed our group for a few hundred meters. He is also a champion lizard catcher, and managed to snag a baby Jacky dragon! (No dragons were harmed in the making of this blog post.) Suz Everingham, Sydney SCB President, and Lily van Eeden, our Treasurer, helped us find many of the rarer and less obvious plants, and identified many of them for us, including pointing out the tiny, hidden sundews that lined small portions of the trail. We would like to send out a huge “Thank you!” to everyone who came to our bush walk, and made it such a wonderful and memorable day. To those of you who couldn’t make it, we hope to see you next time!
