Sydney SCB Big Day Bird Walk

May 13, 2017 at 6:16 am

This morning Dr Stanley Tang and Peri Bolton ran a bird walk in Sydney Olympic Park as part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology‘s Global Big Day. This day encourages people around the world to observe birds and log their observations on the massive online database eBird. Data collated on eBird can be used to explore the changes over time in the spatial distribution and abundances of birds, and can be used to inform conservation of bird species, and how changes in our landscape are affecting bird communities. This is of vital importance to understand, because not only are birds fascinating in their own right, they serve key ecological functions (e.g. pollination, predation) which maintain the ‘health’ of the natural world.

If you would like to participate in Global Big Day, get a free eBird account and start checking off your local birds! You don’t have to be an expert at birds, or go anywhere special. The birds in your backyard are just as important to understand!

Our walk started at the Armory Wharf Cafe and explored the edges of Newington Nature Reserve, which has a lot of wetlands. We finished at the BirdLife Discovery Centre, and were graced with the appearance of a juvenile Little Eagle just as we were packing up!
